How often should you clean your gutters? (UK guide)
Most UK homes need their gutters cleaned once a year, typically late autumn after leaf fall. Properties with overhanging trees, moss-shedding tile roofs, or three or more storeys benefit from a second clean in spring. A 90-minute professional vacuum clean prevents the slow damp damage that costs thousands to fix.
Once a year is the baseline
For most UK homes, semi-detached, no overhanging trees, modern interlocking tiles, once a year is enough. Late October to early December is ideal: after the leaves have fallen, before winter rain reveals the blockages by spilling over your render.
Twice a year if…
Twice-yearly cleans are worth it if you have: heavy overhanging trees (oak, sycamore, conifer), moss-shedding tile roofs (very common in older homes), three or more storeys, or a flat-roof extension that gutters drain across.
Signs your gutters need clearing now
Water spilling over the front edge during rain. Plants growing out of the gutter. Streaks down the render below outlets. Dripping noises at downpipe tops. Damp patches on internal walls that align with gutter joints.
Why it matters financially
A blocked gutter overflow puts water down your render and into your wall cavity. Damp wall repairs, internal redecoration and treating the cause typically cost £1,000,£3,500. A £100 annual gutter clean is the cheapest insurance most homes will ever buy.
